• SMCE can only use Unicode. Do you have it on? Perhaps you imported a Q&A files with a different encoding?
• You cannot change Unicode setting on an existing database (for technical reasons). A workaround can be found here Problems_with_Arabic_on_Pocket_PC
• This can also be helpful: How_to_use_Japanese_on_SM_CE_together_with_SM2004
• The configuration file of the database holds information about the encoding (<dbase>.cfg in section UTF8 1)
