WINE
HOW TO GET SUPERMEMO TO WORK UNDER LINUX USING WINE This is a link to an article on the CUNY Graduate Center research computing wiki. Supermemo 2004 has been installed and tested on two Debian GNU/Linux systems running the unstable release (codename sid).
Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) is required by Supermemo 2004 and must be detected by Supermemo 2004 the Supermemo 2004 installation program, both running under WINE. IE6 was installed using IES 4 Linux; this appears to be the only automated installation program for IE6 under WINE that produces a WINE configuration that works consistently with Supermemo 2004 and the Supermemo 2004 installation program.
Two other WINE configuration utilites for installing IE6 in preparation for Supermemo installation were used prior to IES 4 Linux: Winetools and the Sidenet Wine Configuration Utility. However, because of mixed results getting the prerequite application IE6 to work using Winetools (which appears to be sensitive to the WINE version used) and Sidenet, and the failure of the Supermemo installation program and Supermemo to detect that IE6 had already been installed (using those utilities), these tools were abandoned in favor of IES 4 Linux.
IES 4 Linux has consistently produced usable installations of IE6 that appear relatively insensitive to upgrades of WINE; this is significant for testing Supermemo against new releases of WINE.
- SuperMemo on its own does not use any DLLs (it uses several functions in Windows that require some systemic DLLs that are anyway present in any standard Windows installation). It also does not require an installer. You can move the EXE file onto a new clean machine and it should run ok. In addition to Windows it practically only needs Internet Explorer (ver. 6.0 for full functionality).
